The Thirst Project is the world's largest YOUTH-led water charity. The reason we exist is that right now, on our planet, 663 million people do not have access to basic, safe, clean drinking water. Besides just being a big number, what that PRACTICALLY means is that every day in developing communities around the world, women & children walk from their homesteads to whatever standing water sources they can find. This is usually a river, a stream, a pond, a swamp. These are open, unprotected water sources that are shared with animals that both drink and defecate in the same water that people drink. Drinking from these sources causes people to get easily-preventable waterborne diseases. Most people don't realize that diarrhea & dysentery alone kill more kids under the age of five every day than AIDS & malaria combined! On average, women & children walk 3.75 miles per day to fetch this dirty water. This means that kids are often unable to go to school & get an education and women can't get jobs, simply because of the thousands of hours wasted each year just hauling water.
So, we build freshwater wells, spring protection systems, rainwater harvesting systems, pit latrines for sanitation, hand-washing stations for hygiene, etc. in developing communities to provide people with safe, clean water. That's not terribly unique. There are lots of great water organizations. But what IS is that while we're not the oldest water organization, we're without question the largest YOUTH water organization in the world We send Teams of Speakers all across the United States during the school year to speak at assemblies at high schools & colleges to educate students about the global water crisis & challenge them to DO something about it. Like I said earlier, this school year alone, our School Tour will speak at over 510 campuses to well over 100,000 students. These students then do walks, dances, video game tournaments, etc. all to raise funds to build real water projects around the world for those who need it most.
