Sometimes it's okay to not be okay. But, mental illness should not be ignored. According to the World Health Organization, in 1990, 416 million people all over the world suffered from depression or anxiety. That number has increased to over 615 million 23 years later. No Ordinary Nerd is a part of that statistic. Each one of us has suffered or continues to suffer from depression or anxiety. But we have found a way to escape and cope with these inner demons. We have found peace and hope through nerd culture...video games, comic books, fandoms, and TV or Film. And our message is to share this strength with others who have felt trapped by this crippling disease. In order to do this, we must end the stigma surrounding mental illness.
We have decided to join the fight with Bring Change 2 Mind, a nonprofit organization built to start the conversation about mental health, and to raise awareness, understanding, and empathy. BC2M develops influential public service announcements (PSAs), including its most recent campaign, #MindOurFuture, has piloted evidence-based programs at the university (UBC2M) and high school (LETS BC2M) levels engaging students to reduce stigma and discrimination, and has created a social movement around change by providing people with platforms to share, connect, and learn.
