· Endangered species trafficking is the 4th largest illegal business in the world, coming in behind drugs, weapons and human trafficking.
· 100 million sharks are killed each year, and the fins from up to 73 million sharks are sold for shark fin soup.
· More than 70 shark species are at risk of extinction.
· Some shark populations have declined by 90% in recent decades due to overfishing.
Shark Allies is a non-profit organization, originally established in 2007 in Hawaii and now incorporated in Southern California, dedicated to the protection and conservation of sharks and rays and the ocean realm they live in. In 2010 in Hawaii, Shark Allies was instrumental in the passing of the first law of its kind in the world, which banned the sale, trade and possession of shark fins. Since then, the organization has collaborated with many other conservation groups to introduce bills in California, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia and consulted on many of the US State bills, as well as the establishment of shark sanctuaries. The Hawaii law became model legislation for the States, Territories and Pacific Nations that followed.
Today, the shark fin trade is illegal in 12 US States and 3 Territories, while it remains legal in Florida. Florida is currently the hub for the imports and exports of shark fins in the US, and is therefore participating in and enabling the global trade of fins. The act of finning is illegal in the US.
This past Shark Week, Shark Allies Founder, Stefanie Brendl, alongside Mark Cuban from Shark Tank, appeared on “Shark Tank Meets Shark Week.” With Mark Cuban’s encouragement, this became the inception of the Florida legislation that has now resulted in two bipartisan bills introduced in the Florida State Legislature. HB99 is championed by Representative Kristin Jacobs (D) and SB352 is championed by Senator Joe Gruters (R). Successful passage of a shark fin trade bill would end Florida’s role in the global trade of shark fins and ray parts.
Buying a #NoFinFL tee or hoodie supports the campaign behind these bills. Like them or not, the ocean needs sharks and we need the ocean. To make your voice heard, you can sign on in support of our declaration at www.NoFinFL.org. Help us save sharks!
